The College of Agriculture and Food Science(CAFS) being one of the first units organized in the University of the Philippines (UP), has made and continuously doing an excellent quality of teaching and research, has evolved into a larger university and productive academic community. From 1909 to present, the College of Agriculture passes through different Dean regarded as the head of the college. Below are the lists of UPCA Dean that give great contributions to the growth of the college.

He was born on September 30, 1873 in Monroe, Wisconsin, U.S.A. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Leland Stanford Junior University, U.S.A. in 1895, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Halle in Germany.

Dean Copeland was best known in the scientific and scholarly world as a specialist in ferns. He served as the first Dean of the College of Agriculture, who envisioned a college that will not only engage in teaching but conduct research as well. He is the founder of the University of the Philippines College of Agriculture (UPCA) at Los Baños, Laguna on June 14, 1909.

He was born on March 22, 1872 in Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. He obtained the Bachelor of Science degree in 1891 at the Michigan Agricultural College and Master of Arts in 1903 at Leland Stanford University. Prior to his appointment as dean, Prof. Baker was Head of the Department of Agronomy from 1917 to 1919.

Dean Baker was recognized in the scientific world as an entomologist, zoologist, plant pathologist, mycologist, and botanist. He was the successor of Dean Copeland who served as the second Dean of the College of Agriculture. During his administration, the college grew in size and structure, the BS Sugar Technology program was instituted, the Central Experiment Station was created, and the international reputation in tropical agriculture was elevated. The curricula and faculty of the College gained an “A” rate by the Illinois survey team.

He was born on March 22, 1893 in Apalit, Pampanga. He obtained the Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of the Philippines in 1913, Master of Science at the University of Wisconsin, U.S.A. in 1915, and Doctor of Science in Hygiene at the John Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland U.S.A. in 1923. He was also the first alumnus member of the U.P. Board of Regents in 1918.

Dr. Gonzalez served as the Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry from 1923 to 1939, and Editor of the Philippine Agriculturist from 1929 to 1939. He was the first Filipino and youngest dean who successfully developed new strains of livestock, revised the college curriculum, established the Department of Education and the UP Rural High School as teaching laboratory to prepare students to teach in agricultural schools. He established the Baker Hall, and the Infirmary.

He was born on April 23, 1894 in Calamba, Laguna. He graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1915 and Master of Science (MS) major in entomology in 1918 at the U.P. College of Agriculture, MS major in zoology in 1920, and Doctor of Science in 1922 at the Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Prior to his appointment as dean, he was the first Filipino Head of the Department of Entomology from 1923 to 1926, a position he held until 1959 concurrently as dean.

Dean Uichanco was recognized as the pioneer researcher in insect ecology in the Philippines. He was the longest serving dean who was most noted for rebuilding the College from the ashes of World War II to eminence in agricultural education, and scientific reputation through grants from foreign institutions especially from Cornell University, attracting more students from Southeast Asian countries. His dedication to his alma mater was best embodied in his lyrics of the college hymn, Hail College Dear.

He served as UPCA Dean during World War II, and was arrested and sentenced to death by the Japanese on charges of hiding Americans and aiding guerillas, and later pardoned and dismissed from office. Dean Uichanco later was reinstated after the war, in June 1945.

He was born on June 3, 1892 in Calumpit, Bulacan. He obtained the Bachelor of Agriculture in 1914 and Master of Science degree in 1919 at the UP College of Agriculture and Doctor of Philosophy in 1922 from Yale University, U.S.A.

He was a distinguished scientist in the field of agricultural chemistry and nutrition through his pioneering intensive studies on vitamins, cereals, and various aspects of Philippine nutrition. He served as an acting dean when Uichanco was arrested by the Japanese. Through his tight rope walking and wise management system, the UPCA continued to be operational during war years.

He was born on November 29, 1917 in Biñan, Laguna. He took his high school diploma in 3 years from the Torres High School Manila in 1934, and obtained the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Agronomy in 1939 at the UP College of Agriculture, and Doctor of Philosophy major in genetics and plant breeding in 1949 from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, U.S.A.

As a scientist, he is best known for plant breeding working that resulted in the breeding of improved varieties of food grains, legumes, fruits, and ornamental plants.

He strengthened the graduate programs through the UP Cornell Graduate Education Program and the establishment of SEARCA. He implemented a technical-oriented curriculum, enhancing the college’s leadership in agricultural research, instruction, and extension.

He was born on February 16, 1921. He received the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree in 1944 (magna cum laude) from UP College of Agriculture, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy major in plant pathology in 1948 and 1950, respectively from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. He served the UPCA as Student Assistant starting 1942, Instructor in 1951, and Professor in 1960.

Dean Orillo specializes in mycology and plant pathology. During his time, the College of Agriculture at Los Baños become part of the new University of the Philippines Los Baños, an autonomous unit of the newly established UP System.

He was born on June 10, 1932 in Cabagan, Isabela. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Agronomy in 1955 and Master of Science major in plant breeding in 1958 from the UP College of Agriculture, and Doctor of Philosophy major in genetics in 1962 from the North Carolina State University, U.S.A. He served the UPCA as Student Assistant in 1952, Instructor in 1959, and full Professor of horticulture in 1973.

Dean Bernardo was given an award as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines in the field of genetics in 1966. He organized and systematized the management of UPCA Graduate School, now known as the UPLB Graduate School. It was under his term when the Department of Horticulture, College of Arts and Sciences and Humanities and the Institute of Development Communication was created.

He was born on August 18, 1937 in Ibaan, Batangas. He received the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Agricultural Chemistry in 1956 from the UP College of Agriculture, Master of Science major in animal nutrition in 1962 from the Colorado State University, and Doctor of Philosophy major in animal nutrition in 1965 from the Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, U.S.A. He served the UPCA as Assistant Instructor in 1956 and become full professor in 1975. He was the Chairman of the Department of Animal Science from 1970 to 1974.

Dean Perez was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines in the field of Agriculture in 1976. During his time, three research and development institutes were added to the College by presidential decrees. These were the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC), and the Postharvest Horticulture Training and Research Center (PHTRC). He implemented the 4 year BSA curriculum.

Under Dean Perez administration, the College earned the unprecedented recognition as 1977 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for International Understanding for its quality of Teaching and Research.

He was born on April 19, 1939 in Sto. Niño, Marikina, Metro Manila. He received the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Agronomy in 1960 and Master of Science major in plant breeding in 1964 from the UP College of Agriculture and Doctor of Philosophy major in horticulture in 1966 from Rutgers –

the State University, New Jersey, U.S.A.

Dean Villareal is a plant breeder/ researcher and vegetable specialist, noted for launching the aggressive research and training program in vegetable crops particularly the bacterial wilt-resistant tomatoes. His term marked by infrastructure and program development particularly in the reorganization of the NFAC Countryside Action Program which paved the way for the Agricultural Development Program for the Countryside, an extension approach which helped government units manage agriculture development following the devolution of extension functions from the Department of Agriculture by virtue of the Local Government Code of 1991.

He was born on May 20, 1939 in Daet, Camarines Norte. He received the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in agricultural engineering and statistics in 1960 and Master of Science major in animal science in 1964 from the UP College of Agriculture and Doctor of Philosophy major in animal breeding in 1971 from the Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, U.S.A.

Dean Arboleda specializes in poultry production and animal breeding. He revised the BSA curriculum to incorporate the philosophy of sustainable agriculture, which later was adopted by many colleges of agriculture in the country.

He was born on June 21, 1956 at Los Baños, Laguna. He received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Entomology and Master of Science major in entomology in 1978 and 1982, respectively, from UP Los Baños, and Doctor of Philosophy major in entomology in 1990 from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

Dean Velasco specializes in population/ community ecology, integrated pest management, biological control of insect pest and insect-host plant interaction.

During his term, he pursued the formulation and final drafting of the College of Agriculture’s reorganization plan and laid the groundwork for the institution of curricular programs on biotechnology and agricultural systems.

She was born on August 29, 1950 in Norzagaray, Bulacan. She received the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1972, Master of Science in 1974 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1982 major in entomology from UP Los Baños.

Dean Adalla specializes in economic entomology (host plant resistance), insect pest management and women in agriculture (crop protection). During her term the reorganization into clusters of related disciplines was implemented, and the Agri-Park, a “one-stop-shop” concept of extension to showcase the technologies, products and services of the college was initiated.

He was born on June 20, 1954 in Calamba, Laguna. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture major in Horticulture in 1976, Master of Science in Horticulture in 1981, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1988, from UP Los Baños. He has Post Doctorate Degree from the University of Georgia in Athens, and from the University of Hawaii in 1989.

Dean Angeles has an extensive background on production and nutrition of horticultural crops. He taught a wide range of courses from propagation, physiology, and production. He is the former Chair of the Department of Horticulture, and Associate Dean of UPLB College of Agriculture. He is also the incumbent Chair of the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies on Food Security.

He was born on August 17, 1953 in Tondo, Manila. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, major in Animal Science in 1977, and Master of Science in 1982, both from UP Los Baños. He gained his Doctor of Philosophy in Range Science in 1990 from the Texas A & M University College Station, Texas U.S.A.

Dean Supangco specializes in Animal Science. He is the former UPLB Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, the Director of UPLB Center for Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship, and the present holder of the CAFS office. During his term the College of Agriculture was awarded by the Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Excellence in Agriculture Education.
