SCS confers three scientists from CAFS

The Scientific Career System (SCS) held an oath taking of newly conferred and upgraded scientists last August 9 at Richmonde Hotel, Eastwood Libis, Quezon City. Among the seven who were awarded, three came from CAFS, namely: Scientists Mario V. Navasero, Olivia P. Damasco, and Fe M. Dela Cueva.

Scientist Mario V. Navasero, prior to his conferment to Scientist II, was granted the rank of Scientist 1 in 2013. His works focus on insect taxonomy, biological control, and pest management. He is currently a University Researcher III at the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC). Scientist Navasero is known for his work on cessation of outbreak of cocolisap with the use of Comperiella calauanica.

Scientist Fe M. Dela Cueva, a University Researcher V at Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), works on the development of virus inducing protocols for major banana viruses using anti-body based and nucleic-acid based detection techniques which resulted to the Plant Pathology Laboratory of UPLB as the National Virus Indexing Lab for banana by Bioversity International.

Also a University Researcher V at IPB, Scientist Olivia P. Damasco is known for her breakthrough technology in which she pioneered the banana tissue culture. Moreover, she also developed and optimized tissue culture regeneration protocol for several major crops which has become a powerful tool in non-conventional and new breeding techniques.

Present during the conferment were CAFS Dean Elpidio M. Agbisit Jr., former Chancellor Ruben V. Villareal, National Scientist Dolores A. Ramirez, Dr. Rey L. Villareal, Dr. Violeta N. Villegas, and Ms. Virma Rea G. Lee. (CELee with information from Scientific Career System, photos from RLVilareal).
