CAFS holds refresher course on news, technical writing
To strengthen its public relations and extension efforts, the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), through the Aggie Green and Gold (AGG) and TheAgriTourist Magazine (ATM) committee, organized a two-day online training titled, “CAFS Writing Refresher” on 26-27 May 2021 via Zoom. CAFS faculty, REPS, administrative staff, and students participated in the training.
News and feature writing was discussed on the first day of the workshop by Mr. Miguel Victor T. Durian, university extension associate and affiliate assistant professor in the Department of Development Journalism. He discussed the key points in writing news and feature articles as well as the current trends in journalism in the time of pandemic.
After the lecture, Mr. Durian also facilitated a writeshop, wherein the participants were tasked to write a straight news article in 30 minutes.
Following this, Assistant Prof. Reianne M. Quilloy discussed scientific and technical writing during the secon d day of the training. She shared the process of journal writing through storytelling. She also emphasized the importance of reporting research, as research not communicated is research not done.
Assistant Prof. Quilloy also incorporated a few exercises on abstract writing and journal finding that engaged the participants.
On the first day of the training, Dean Elpidio M. Agbisit, Jr., graced the event and stressed the importance of communicating the initiatives of the College in a way that people could understand. He reiterated that all institutions of the College must be felt, seen, and heard by the stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Dr. Barbara L. Caoli, associate dean for research and extension, gave an overview of what to expect in the training for both days. She encouraged the participants to work together in improving the college publication by reporting the activities, accomplishments, and other endeavors using different media.
The training was attended by over 50 participants from different units of CAFS.
